Bloys Camp
Meeting
Each summer, in the foothills
of the Davis Mountains, at Skillman's Grove, people come to camp
in six different encampments, for preaching, teaching, and great
food.
This is an ecumenical experience
with Presbyterians, the Disciples of Christ, United Methodists, and
Southern Baptists joining to provide the ministers for the various
worship services. The central Tabernacle can seat 1885 for any service
and the combination of nature's setting, spiritual study and fellowship,
and just visiting around the cook sheds at mealtimes has made this
annual meeting an event that draws people from around the nation.
Every denomination is welcome,
and it has been that way since the first camp meeting in 1890. It
was originated by the Reverend W.B. Bloys, with the aid of local
cattlemen and their families.
Lately, this camp meeting has
drawn more than six thousand worshippers. It is a unique historical
piece of Texas tradition.
