Goat Field
Day
Yes, there is a Goat Field Day.
Check with the organization called Big Bend People and Goats for
details.
There are any number of goats
around town and we even have a famous (albeit stuffed) goat in the
back room at Ivey's Emporium on Holland Avenue. How does a goat become
famous? This one did it by swilling lots of beer, straight from the
bottle. Now you may have encountered the latest incarnation of this
fad down in Terlingua, near the the Trading Post, but those goats
are impostors -- or at least impersonators -- of the original beer-drinking
goat.
Incidentally, goats are welcome
at the Holland Hotel, but we usually prefer them to be cooked first.

This led to another great Alpine
goat moment during the summer's Gallery
Night. One entry in the silent charity auction was a do-it-yourself cabrito dinner,
including a fine wine, flowers, and a live goat, prominently displayed
in a cage in front of the Holland Hotel.
The poor perplexed and perturbed
goat garnered the spotlight for the evening's silent bidding as the
crowd contemplated the goat's fate in various ways. As sometimes
happens in Alpine, there was a happy ending for all, as an anonymous
bidder paid $1000 for the goat, with the proviso that it be released
and not eaten.
If you missed Goat Field Day
this year, make your reservations early for next year.
