This wonderful park may be the best thing in our back yard. The Rio Grande has been digging exquisite canyons for years and we offer them to our guests for their entertainment and enlightenment. There are mountains, cliffs, and some pretty big holes to enjoy, whether you're climbing, hiking, photographing, or just looking from the car. The wildlife is truly wild and the flora is everything you've ever heard about desert plantlife.
The Forest Service maintains the park for our guests and offers several convenient oasis resting spots, plus knowledgeable rangers and cogent exhibits. The park is so remote that you can be as alone as you like, or you can find well marked and well travelled trails where you will occasionally mingle with casual travelers and exploreres.
The friendly signage will guide you and explain what you're experiencing. There are just enough deadly rattlesnakes, scorpions, tarantulas, bears, and mountain lions to make you keep your eyes peeled and your heart pumping. If you'd arrived earlier, you would've found even more unusual wildlife judging from the variety of dinosaurs that have been excavated here.
The Big Bend National Park is far enough off the beaten path that you won't find any casual visitors. Dedicated exploreres and tourists come from all over the world, but they come in small groups and they are respectful of the natural wonders of the park, as well as their fellow travelers. There's enough park to go around for everyone.
